Sustainability Trends at the VŠE Event Centre

Sustainability has become an increasingly important topic within the events industry in recent years. Today, event organisers focus not only on the delivery of an event itself, but also on its environmental impact, while maintaining high standards and a positive experience for attendees. Key trends include waste reduction, the use of reusable materials, and digitalisation. These principles can be effectively applied within the VŠE Event Centre, which, thanks to its wide range of regularly organised events, provides an ideal environment for their long-term implementation.

One of the most significant trends is the use of reusable visual elements. Instead of producing new materials each year, the Event Centre aims to create items that can be used repeatedly. This approach is reflected, for example, in the Talent VŠE competition, where a symbolic cheque used during the award ceremony is not linked to a specific year. Such elements represent a simple yet effective step towards greater sustainability, replacing single-use printed materials while remaining both functional and visually appealing.

Another important trend is the reduction of printed materials and their replacement with digital alternatives. Printed programmes and maps have become increasingly rare at events. QR codes now play a key role by providing attendees with easy access to schedules, maps, and other information directly on their mobile devices. The VŠE Event Centre applies this principle through QR codes and links shared on social media and the website, where visitors can find online registration forms and detailed information about individual events. Digitalisation not only reduces environmental impact but also simplifies event management and enhances the attendee experience.

Closely related to this is online registration, which enables organisers to manage event capacity more effectively and estimate attendance more accurately. This makes it possible to plan catering more efficiently, reduce food waste, and improve visitor flow and navigation throughout the event.

An equally important aspect of sustainable events is the way food and beverages are served. Reusable tableware is increasingly replacing single-use alternatives. The VŠE Event Centre has already adopted this approach at its events. For example, during last year’s International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP) Annual Conference, only reusable tableware was used, and all waste generated during the event was subsequently processed in an environmentally responsible manner.

Sustainability is gradually becoming a natural part of event organisation at VŠE rather than merely a theoretical concept. Looking ahead, the aim is to continue developing this approach and further improve the efficiency, responsibility, and sustainability of events organised at the university.
